Welcome to the Chris Harmanda Foundation

Chris Harmanda was a remarkable man — an inspiration to many and an example of true humanity. He dedicated his life to supporting people in need and making a meaningful difference in their lives.

Born in Cyprus, Chris moved to the UK at the age of six with his parents and siblings in search of a better future. He never forgot the kindness shown to his family when they first arrived. He spoke often, with deep admiration and gratitude, about the people who helped them. From a young age, he worked tirelessly to succeed and went on to become one of the Greek community’s most respected businessmen.

Chris was known for his quiet strength, generosity, humility and compassion. He was admired by thousands of people, young and old. In 1983, he founded London Greek Radio (LGR) and led the then-pirate station for six years until its legalisation in 1989 — all while running several successful businesses in the UK and abroad. Everything he did was rooted in his love for the Greek and Greek-Cypriot community in the UK. He played a vital role in strengthening the connection between London, Greece, and Cyprus.

Despite his public presence, Chris lived a life of private, often unseen generosity. Every day, he helped people quietly — offering moral support, financial assistance, guidance and advice. His office door was always open, filled with people seeking his steady, thoughtful counsel. He spoke little, but his actions spoke loudly. He was a man of few words, but always a man of his word.

When Chris passed away suddenly in March 2018 from a massive hematoma, his family were overwhelmed by the number of people who came forward to share stories of the help he had given them — often without anyone else knowing.

To honour his memory and continue his life’s mission, the Chris Harmanda Foundation was created to “help less fortunate families during illness.” Its hand-picked Trustees and Board Members are family, associates and dear friends he loved and trusted.

Because Chris would have wanted it.
Because Chris would have worked for it.
Because Chris is still guiding us from above.

As Chris often said during the radio-marathon he founded:

“Even the smallest donation will go a very long way.”

Chris Harmanda — unequivocally, a great philanthropist.
